What?

This is what we are going to do in 24 hours:

Climb 3 tallest National peaks: Ben Nevis in Scotland, 1,344 metres (4,409 ft), Snowdon in Wales, 1,085 metres (3,560 ft), and Scafell Pike in England, 978 metres (3,209 ft).

In all the challenge involves some 42 kilometres (26 mi) of ascent and descent, with total travel approaching 765 kilometres (475 mi).

How hard is it going to be:
The important thing is that we all have fun, typical Artur Voyage style, however since we want to complete the challenge, if you feel that you won't be able to summit a given mountain we would ask you to take a rest and attempt the next one. In all, it should be very challanging, but with some training not impossible for a typical corporate mortal. So why not give it a go?
When we were singing up to cycle from London to Paris and more importantly from the coast of France to Paris in 24 hours some of us have never cycled more than 13km ever! But we did it, so...

We made it to Paris, from UK to Eiffle Tower in around 24 hours! All for Social Entrepreneurship!

So it happened, we cycled to Paris in record time ;-) and here is what happened and how it happened.

We were meant to take off at 3pm however there a few problems which slowed us down:
> Marek broke the speedmeter whilst putting it on
> Monika and Adrian broke the key to their padlock, so we had to get the security team to chain saw the lock.

We were all off at 3.40.

About 5 o'clock Artur had a small accident when his front wheel went into the tram tracks (who would know they have trams in south of London!)

About 7.30 after getting soaked in the rain and nearly killed by million of cars on the A road coming our of London Artur's tire goes bust. With no repair kit, we decide to take the train.

When we enter the station we see a tran approaching, so we leg it. On the train we are adviced to leave as its not the right direction, however as it turned out we were in such a small village we had to take it to get back on teh line (London - Gatwick) Once on the line we take the train to Gatwick, from Gatwick we took a train to Lewes from where we take another train to newhaven. Being the last people to enter the ferry we count ourselves as lucky to have made it.

In the meantime Marek's and Monika's tires went bust.

On the ferry Adrian helps out with the tire repair kit which he accidently took from the rental shop. Marek and Donal prove to be legends when it comes to locating holes, taking the wheels off and removing the tubes. In 1 hour the tires are all fixed and we are ready to eat.

After consuming the food we all die in the kids pool (the one which has plastic balls instead of water). Sleeping there wet we get woken up when the ferry arrives at 3.30am in Dieppe.

In Dieppe we are very happy to have booked a hotel, thinking its in the centre we cycle singing along about the great sleep we will have before the massive ride which awaits us on the next day. So short was our happy mood, as we find out that previously described (on the internet) a hotel a few minutes away from the beach proves to be outside of town on the nastiest hill 1 hour away!
We get to bed at 5.

wake up at 9.

Leave (with no bfast ps; dont do this, its stupid) at 9.25.

We found out a day before that there is a great route called Avenue Verte which will take us 40km towards Paris on cycle paths only.
So happy, after nasty experiences on roads in the UK we start cycling.

Our pace was slow, our rear ends were sore and it was wet and windy.

We make 30km in 4 hours. Very dissapointed, morale down, we think its impossible. At least (180-30) 150km left. And we wanted to do it in one day, to wake up in paris.

We eat, Donal and Artur buy a whole chicken each! Artur even bought cutlery to eat like a human being whilst sitting on the tamarc on carefur car park ;-)

Everyone consumes around 2000cal after which we feel energised. It was out first meal of the day.

We make amazing time, averaging about 21 km after that with Marek's leadership on his race bike. He peaked with 60-70km top speeds when rushing down wet roads. Crazy boy! But thanks to his guidance and information (he kept telling us we are going slow and kept saying there is only 15 km to go when it was well over 40km) we MADE IT!

The team hit the suburbs at around 10pm, entered central Paris at around 12pm and Eiffle tower just before 2 o'clock to find out that the lights had gone off just before we took the camera out to snap some pictures ;-) But at least we got some good shots of Arc de Triumph ;-)

We die in the beds, wake up on Sunday by heavy banging of the cleaning lady screaming to us that we will pay for staying over the check out time.

Enjoying the city of romance and love we take the Eurostar at 8.13 to get back home :-)

it feels like I have been away for a few weeks, but its only been a few hours ;-)
it just shows how important its to change the environment from time to time, just to get another perspective.

i loved it ;-) (but will not do it again) knees are killing, thighs are dead, satisfaction is AMAZING

I will definitely not recommend Wildhorizon as a company for camper rentals

Due to the horrible customer service and their inability to prepare a camper, although they said everthing will be fine, we are ending up to have to take the eurostar. which means we cannot leave later on on friday but have to start off early, start at 3pm

the ferry is from LD LINES Neheaven to Dieppe for 20£ (do not get a berth)

Artur voyage raises money for Social Entrepreneurship with London Paris weekend bike ride

Artur voyage family is set to cycle a crazy distance of London to Paris in just 1 weekend.

The team members will finish their normal day at school and then run to get onto their bikes to start the challenge.

Great thanks to Laura Narbutaite and Laurynas Jankauskas who offered to assist the team with a car.

Global Warming, looking at things differently

Artur voyage is really concerned with global warming. That is why we are going to Turkey to enjoy the sun on the 90 ft boat. (read earlier posts about it)

It is potentially a great danger to us. It could get a lot warmer and extreme. England could become the holiday destination, for more quotes check:

The plan is as follows: end of march 5/7 days in Istanbul visiting big companies and Entrepreneurial ventures. (cost not yet determined)

After this section of the trip the most successful applications will be able to go the boat journey for 7 days on a fully catered, fully serviced 30 m sail yacht (cost 800 pounds)

The review from Transssiberian and the Lonely Mongolian Pony

Chapter 53: Mongolia

This time round we went travelling almost quite literally half-way around the world with Artur Voyage: http://arturvoyage.com. Participants, students, were chosen very rigorously as the challenge was extreme: the Trans-Siberian Railway. The Trans-Siberian (as you may already know) is the longest railway in the world, crossing over 10,000 kilometers. We set off in Beijing to finish exhausted in Moscow.

The two core aims of our team were to save the legendary Przewalski horse and to educate people along the way about the importance of sustainability.

The Przevalski horse, the main component of the Mongolian national emblem, and known to them as the Takki, is currently critically endangered: and only a few years ago it was extinct in the wild. Thanks to an incredible amount of work and dedication from all sides, these noble creatures were reintroduced into the wild there are currently around 300 of these little horses roaming the pastures of Mongolia. It is claimed that it is precisely this wild horse that is the ancestor of the modern one, so its importance for humanity and its progress cannot be undermined. As cheesy as it sounds these horses helped us, now it is the time to take the leap and help them.

Upon our arrival in Mongolia (after ‘only’ 12 hours at the border control!) we made our way straight to the horses. It is almost mind boggling to imagine that this is a country where less than 3 million people coexist with over 35 million head of livestock, not to mention that the horse to human ratio is 13:1! We went trekking the valleys of this beautiful country a few hours drive away from the capital Ulan Bataar (in Terelj and Hustai National Parks). During our stay we have managed to make a donation and essentially ‘buy’ a little Przewalski horse which we named ‘The Lonely Mongolian Pony’. This means that the money we gave to Hustai National Park will raise the creature and ensure it is able to continue the survival of the species out of captivity. On our trek through the park we coincidentally came across an injured Takki with a broken leg, we instantly informed the medics of its exact GPS location and hopefully ensured it got the proper attention and treatment it needed.

After the Mongolian rescue we continued the exploration of Siberia, quad biking across the forests of Olokhon Island the pearl in the ‘Blue Eye of Siberia’, the deepest lake in the world at 1642m, lake Baikal. We also managed to go fishing, catch a fish, wakeboard with the locals and cross fast-moving waist deep rivers by foot when there were no bridges…even lecturing a chemistry student conference about the environment!

The adventure finished off thankfully safely in Moscow when the brave team departed back to their respective countries spreading word about these seldom explored, but just as important, parts of our world.

After Mongolian rescue we have continued the exploration of Siberia with quad biking across the forests of Olchon Island on the deepest lake in the world 1,642 m (5,390 ft) the Baikal. We also managed to catch a fish, wakeboard with the locals and cross waist deep rivers by foot when there were no bridges.

Artur Voyage: ‘Half- way around the world’.

To quote two of Russia’s most renowned authors and hence philosophers:

“Neither man or nation can exist without a sublime idea” – Fyodor Dostoyevsky but according to Anton Chekhov: “Knowledge is of no value unless you put it into practice”. Let us tell you of our ‘sublime idea’ and how we aim to put it into practice.

Selected students from LSE, Cambridge and Warwick Universities are set to embark upon a month long expedition commencing in Beijing and ending in Moscow, crossing over 10 000 kilometers of one of the most seldom traversed terrains of the world along the way.

Faced with the question of what lies directly in-between China and the Ural Mountains, the average Westerner would shrug his shoulders in ignorance. The beautiful vast topography of China, and the immensity of the great Mongolian and Siberian plain, would be a good answer. This also makes up one of the largest wildernesses of this planet and it lies ahead of the intrepid team of Artur Voyage. Using numerous means of local transport, such as trains to buses, they will retrace their steps home and spread the word of the world that so little is known about (there’s no Orientalism in the Occident at all, Edward W. Said would have something to say about that...).

The travel diary starts with the attendance of the largest Building and Environmental Business fair in Beijing, where the Artur Voyage team will learn about progress in the sustainable development industry, which is nowadays ever growing in importance.

Following the Chinese visit, they will work on a project with local communities in Mongolia with the aim of helping the critically endangered Przewalski horse species.

The Przewalski horse was once extinct in the wild, but due to the efforts of the international community, the noble national symbol of Mongolia was re-introduced to its natural habitat after many years of costly breeding work and relocation to their natural habitat. The Przewalski horse now runs free in the reserve park near Ulaanbaatar. It is awe-inspiring how much can be achieved with the help and support of people working together for a common goal. Nevertheless, ever more help, especially financial, is needed to sustain the growth of the population to sustainable numbers. The numbers of the horses in the wild are still critically low – estimations range from only 300 to 500.

Today’s popular romantic notions of ‘Tourism into the wild’ and ‘Eco-Tourism’, of going “to the woods” just like Walden Thoreau, is generating an influx of visitors to these unspoiled regions. Artur Voyage recognises this trend and we’d like to reassure you we’re not just crazy naive adolescents.

The Warwick team, which has only recently returned from an expedition in the Antarctic with polar explorer Robert Swan, will share their experiences and increase environmental awareness in the Siberian part of the trip. Eco-friendly tourism will be suggested and encouraged to the locals. Sustainable tourism mentality should be established as soon as possible, to minimize the risk of tourism changing the cultural, historical as well as environmental picture and landscape of Siberia. As the famous saying goes, it will teach how to fish to eat for a lifetime, instead of giving fish to eat just for a day. These efforts will be concentrated in the Baikal Lake region, concentrating on the famous village of Litchvyanka.

Throughout the expedition, with the intellectual baggage of Architecture from Cambridge, Economics from the London School of Economics and Business Management from Warwick propping them up, the team will develop and propose possible sustainable solutions to the local communities. Solutions to the potential problems these communities may be experiencing as a result of tourism. The combination of the team’s various disciplines will enable them to turn ideas into realistically attainable goals. This will help them to accept change in a positive and sustainable way, aiding to develop their local economies and attract more visitors that will follow the established rules of Eco-Tourism.

It was interesting to see that their report predicted the dramatic fall of the prices in the region, which met their expectations. Although the fall in the real estate markets in these areas is now assigned to the world economic situations, Artur Voyage established clear fundamental reasons for the unsustainable growth levels in these regions.
